A New New-play Pipeline

The American New Play pipeline is broken. Higher Education has a vital role to play in the American Theatre Industrial Complex beyond preparing tomorrow’s theatremakers for a career in the arts. Not only can we empower our students to disrupt and dismantle current power structures in order to build equitable practice, but we are uniquely positioned to effect and influence the American New Play Pipeline in real time, right now.

Our Program cuts the strings of the current non-profit development model (often referred to as “Development Hell”), where playwrights compete for limited development dollars in programs that rarely result in production, AND our program supports playwrights by offering them the room to experiment, fail, grow, and develop their plays free of “World Premiere” pressure. By capitalizing on its inherent laboratory setting, College Theatre Programs can truly help plays become their best selves, independent of commercial interests.

We are looking for fellow artist revolutionists who want to disrupt the American new play pipeline!

If You Believe…

  • Artist Educators design our own tables, therefore we can make the table any size/shape we want – and there is room for everyone at our table.
  • New Play Development has a beginning (readings, talk-backs), middle (revision and rehearsal), and end (production).
  • Big casts = big education opportunities
  • Developing Plays of Tomorrow alongside theatremakers of tomorrow builds professional networks and connection before students even graduate.
  • Developing New Voices in Theatre is every artist educator’s mission, thus we are particularly well-equipped to help playwrights develop their work
  • Developing new works on campus gives theatremakers of tomorrow the opportunity to shape tomorrow’s canon.
